VIRTUAL VISITS
Does insurance cover virtual visits? Even from across state lines?
It’s a bit nuanced, and our team will always check your benefits to confirm. Several factors can affect coverage, including:
State licensure – we are licensed to provide medical nutrition therapy (MNT) in some states, but not all. Take a peek at the map to see if we are licensed in your state!
Telehealth coverage – Some insurance plans cover virtual nutrition counseling visits, while others do not. Right now (2025) due to the recent pandemic most insurances are covering telehealth services. However, it is possible your insurance plan may impose a cost-share for you to use this service.
Plan type – PPO plans work across state lines, while HMO plans are usually limited to in-state local providers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Some insurance plans such as Medicare, Medicaid, and HMO plans do require a referral from your doctor in order for nutrition counseling (medical nutrition therapy) to be covered.
Most the time, nutrition services are exempt from copays and deductibles. This means insurance will pay for the full cost of your visits regardless of whether or not the deductible has been met yet.
The prompt pay rates are as follows:
- Initial 90-minute appointment: $150
- Follow-up 60-minute appointment: $100
Discounts are provided for bundled purchases:
- Three 60-minute follow-ups: $270 (save $10/session; $30 total)
- Six 60-minute follow-ups: $480 (save $20/session; $120 total)
