Even though I became a dietitian to use food as medicine, I cannot deny that medication is very necessary for many individuals. Sometimes people choose medications because it is easier than changing their eating and exercise habits. Other times, people are doing everything they can from a lifestyle perspective and still require medication (although it is far fewer prescriptions than if they weren’t eating well and moving their body).
Either way, it’s okay! You, me, and your doctor can collaborate to find best medication for you while considering efficacy, safety, budget, schedule, and side effects.
When compared to primary care physicians, I tend to air on the side of less blood sugar pricks. Unless you are pregnant or on insulin, blood sugar pricks do not need to be an every day affair. However, it is still important to monitor on occasion- that means learning how to use a blood sugar meter AND being able to interpret the number as in range or out.
